What’s memorable: How far she’s fallen, with the homelessness and prostitution and abusive boyfriend. Her emotionless and seemingly uncaring mother (i.e. “There are times I should have pretended to care more than I did”) and how she refused to tell her she loved her even at the intervention. Most of all, her kids. How much they adore her and care about her, how emotional they are about seeing where she’s at now. The post-rehab airport reunion at the end was so full of love and joy, it was beyond heartwarming. This was a truly powerful family story and reminded me of why I love this show so much. “I can’t believe my family gives that much of a shit about me. Unbelievable” – Diana. That is the point of Intervention right there.

His crazy untrue stories, the whopper of a lie we find out about at the very end, getting bullied and kidnapped as a kid, his mother’s need to never lose him. And the lovely followup.

What’s Memorable: The man who raped when she was a kid (her sister’s boyfriend) went to jail for raping someone else and is about to be released. Her need to escape is understandable. The way she talks about what happened is excruciating. She has so much pain and reasonable resentment. It seems from the followup like she had found some measure of peace in her sobriety. I hope that continues.

What’s memorable: It’s great to see Elena doing so well, she was one of my all time favorites, but it’s terrible that she has to feel responsible for introducing her granddaughter to meth.  Sarah’s in some severe denial, thinking she’s just partying like any other 21 year old. “Gimme a line and I’ll do it. It’s not hurting me really so I don’t know why it’s a big deal.”

What’s memorable:  Her parents not understanding how a 3 year old could even be molested, and not doing anything to support her when she finally told them about it. The things she said to her sister in law were awful and insenstive – there’s gotta be some amends to make there. I loved that she met Sam (from the last episode) in treatment and they became fast friends. Having someone there that just went through an intervention (televised!) must be so comforting. I hope they continue to help each other through recovery.

What’s memorable: She lost her kids because of the incredibly sketchy living environment they were in. I don’t blame the parents for taking custody at all, seems like they were pretty endangered there. Katie (at least as she was portrayed in the episode) is definitely not a very present as a mother. Watching her hiding in the car smoking meth while her kids were asking where she was, that was brutal. And the whole claiming her friend stole the journal that had her mother’s bank account info in it? No. How awful for that family. I don’t know if Katie really had the perfect childhood with no obvious addiction trigger or if the show’s new format of spending very little time on backstories meant they/we just didn’t find out the ways that her childhood wasn’t so perfect.

Ken was amazing in this one. And by amazing I mean “Good god how does he deal with this relentless abuse and keep his composure?”

What’s Memorable: Everything is memorable. Her eyes, her bare feet, how the words coming out of her mouth mean something to her and nothing to anyone else.  Every person in her entire support system is an addict in recovery and she felt like she needed war stories but then couldn’t handled them when they happened. Sierra’s brain cannot deal with drugs. Donna shows up for this one in a big way. I don’t think that any other interventionist could have done this intervention better than she did.

Official Synopsis: The daughter of a small business owner, Sierra was an honor student with dreams of college and a career in journalism. But when a double-dealing artist charmed his way into her mother’s life, he gambled away their home and the bottom fell out of Sierra’s world, leading to a frightening drug-induced psychotic break. What’s Memorable: Brittany’s relationship with her dad is really moving. The guy seems so damn cool and a really good father, despite his addiction. I had a lot of respect for his willingness to go to treatment to help get his daughter clean. If that’s what he needs to motivate himself, fine, as long as it keeps him clean and keeps Brittany feeling supported.

What’s Memorable: The deeply disturbing way Clint behaves when he’s high. You know those crazy videos of people acting psychotic on frakka or bath salts? He’s like that. I’ve never seen anyone act this way on the drugs he does. I wonder if his untreated ADHD contributes somehow?

Official Synopsis: Clint, 36, was raised in a tight-knit, middle-class family. His parents expected success for their four children who were all precocious and engaged in school. But in high school, when his siblings had gone off to college, Clint fell in with the wrong crowd and began to struggle. The only graduation he would see was to a life controlled by crystal meth and opioids. At a loss as to where it all went wrong, Clint’s parents have seen their son’s excesses progress to crazy and dangerous levels. Without an intervention, they know he will die.

What’s Memorable: The whole weird situation with his sister on a night when he was high was disturbing. I hope he’s made amends for that because it clearly affected his sister Katie, she obviously needs some closure there.  I love that when he got to treatment he was immediately motivated to commit himself to recovery and really make an effort. I love it when they do that! All in all a powerful and heartwarming episode.

What’s Memorable: This one is absolutely heartbreaking and it’s one of the most moving and uplifting episodes of Intervention ever. The family dynamics of the 3 adult children here are clearly the fault of neglectful and absent family members. I think that’s what Andrew was getting at during the Intervention – yeah mom was the huge fuck up who did everything exactly wrong but where was everyone else? There were 3 kids here that needed family and no one was there for them. The sisters had to parent their little brother, feel helpless when he wanted to stay with the mom who sold him off, had to see him being horribly abused, and weren’t able do anything about any of it. As adults, with all those guilt issues weighing on them, they are trying to reconnect and do something to help him in his pain. The dinner they all had together -you could feel Robbie’s sense of being out of place, of wanting to be able to talk to his sisters but not having the tools to say anything meaningful, despite how he may have felt about being with them again. The intervention was one of the best I’ve seen. Andrew rocked it, and the followup was amazing. Dammit I love this episode.

(Guest Post by Stefan) What’s Memorable: This episode illustrated the concept of Patriarchal Blessing in the Mormon Church, which was something I was unfamiliar with. It was a breath of fresh air to have such a religious family be as supportive/understanding of an addicted family member as Jenny’s was (it’s something I feel like isn’t so common on this show). Also, her shooting up and nodding off while giving a haircut was disturbing.

What’s Memorable:  Mallory’s story is pretty heartbreaking, all the trauma she suffered while still doing her best to be a good mom to 6 kids, it’s not shocking that she turned to drugs to escape. But that conversation with her daughters where she tells them that calling out her crappy behavior and telling her how they feel makes her want to use, because she’s been trying SO HARD to be sober, and her daughter saying “that’s not something you say to your children.” She’s right, it’s not, it’s so deeply manipulative, and also such a common thing for addicts to do to the people who love them. It’s taking the care and love that people show and turning it around, giving themselves permission to get high and feel justified about it, and making their loved ones feel like it’s their fault. It’s one of the uglier things that addiction does to cause family members such intense pain and frustration.
